IBM introduces data consolidation software

IBM announced on April 3 it has launched new software that enables companies to consolidate data and increase search efficiency, said Bernie Spang, director of strategy and marketing, Database Software at IBM. It will be available April 30.

The software -- DB2 and InfoSphere Warehouse 10 -- can integrate into data systems that are already in place, Spang said. The new technology compresses the data so that it takes up less space and is easily organized based on names and keywords, he said.

Clients who tested IBM's new software included Coca Cola, Triton Consulting, and Holiday Extras, a British company. In all, more than 100 companies participated in IBM's pilot program, Spang said.

According to an IBM press release, some companies were able to perform searches up to 10 times faster and create up to 90 percent more storage space by using DB2 10 and InfoSphere Warehouse 10.

“Our client organizations have more and more data, and they want to analyze it and use the advantage more so than ever before,” Spang said. “It's about faster and lower cost management of data.” The software looks for repeating patterns in data, which helps consolidate and sort it to form meaningful analysis. The software was in development for four years, before its launch today, Spang said.

“Companies of all sizes and all industries are dealing with these data management challenges,” Spang said. “This is about better performance, more efficient use of storage space and more things done automatically to improve the productivity of the team.”
