Comic Book Resources Debuts Free E-Mail Service

Comic Book Resources, an informational Web site geared to comic book fans, recently introduced a free e-mail service that it hopes will serve as a viral marketing tool.

The company plans to offer comic-related domain names, such as @superpowers.com, @comicfan.com and @batmanfans.com, to its 10,000 registered users.

Jonah Weiland, president of Comic Book Resources, Los Angeles, said the goal of the service -- CBR Mail -- is to reinforce the brand as well as bring new people to the marketplace.

"One thing that we hope happens as a result of the service is that people that are using the service send e-mails out to friends and associates that don't collect comics," Weiland said.

Weiland also hopes the e-mail service will generate traffic to the Web site, www.comicbookresources.com. An increase in Web traffic, he said, also would help the company with its advertising impressions.

Comic Book Resources has promoted the new service via its e-newsletters, which are delivered twice a week, Weiland said. In addition, the company placed targeted banner ads on several Web sites, including Salon.com's comic book vertical channel.

Since CBR Mail became available on Friday, 500 people have signed up for the service, Weiland said.
