Catalog, Internet Boost Q1 for Williams-Sonoma

Double-digit percentage increases in several categories were reported yesterday by Williams-Sonoma Inc., San Francisco, as it announced results for its fiscal first quarter ended May 2.


Net revenues jumped 19.4 percent, reaching $640.9 million. Also, net earnings totaled $21.4 million, a significant improvement over last year's $13.4 million.


Direct-to-customer net sales, including catalog and Internet, grew 24.2 percent to $246.6 million, increasing from last year's $198.6 million. Internet sales skyrocketed by $35.3 million, or 58.6 percent, to $95.6 million.


Retail net sales increased 15.3 percent to $349.4 million compared with $303.1 million last year. This included a comparable store sales increase of 6.8 percent.
