Cargo Ups Rate Base 17% to 350,000

Condé Nast Publications announced yesterday it will increase by 17 percent its rate base for Cargo, a men's shopping magazine launched in March.

Starting with the February issue, Cargo will have a rate base of 350,000 copies, up from 300,000 at its inception. Strong reader response at newsstands and via subscriptions led to the decision.

Cargo is modeled on Condé Nast's Lucky, a shopping magazine for women, whose rate base is up 80 percent since the December 2000 launch.

Using Lucky's formula, Cargo runs editorial captions and prices next to photographs of men's apparel, tech products, cars, gifts and grooming items. The buyers guide essentially offers tips on what's hot for men's products.

Meanwhile, Cargo will continue with plans to publish six times this year and 10 times in 2005.
