Direct Media, Millard Inc. to merge on July 1, May takes helm

Parent company InfoGroup has combined its Direct Media and Millard brands to form Direct Media Millard Inc. (DMM), a new direct marketing company that officially launches July 1. The two groups will combine their client rosters and work together to serve them. Larry May, CEO of Direct Media will serve as the president of Direct Media Millard, while Jeff Kelley, president of Millard, will serve as president of consumer management for DMM.
 

Jay Berlin appointed CEO of The Sportsman's Guide

Multichannel merchant Redcats USA has appointed Jay Berlin as CEO of catalog and Internet brand The Sportsman's Guide. Berlin previously held marketing management roles with Fingerhut and C.O.M.B. Corp., and was SVP of catalog and e-commerce business lines for Northern Tool & Equipment.

Draftfcb NY new division puts new spin on CRM

Draftfcb New York has merged its media, digital and CRM practices into a single unit called the Real-Time Marketing division. The change, which is in response to the industry-wide focus on CRM and digital, impacted 100 company employees, who were relocated within the building to be in closer proximity and under the same operating budget.

The US operations of Metro International SA, publisher of free dailies, have been sold to former Metro CEO Pelle Tornberg. Metro International, which cited loss of revenue in the US division as a reason for the sale, is taking a loss of $2 million on the sale, the AP reported.

AOL's Platform-A president Greg Coleman is leaving AOL after only a couple of months in the position, as part of big changes at AOL since Tim Armstrong replaced Randy Falco as chairman/CEO less than a month ago. Coleman's dismissal comes after Time Warner reported a 7% decline in revenues in the first quarter of 2009, which it attributed largely to decreases at the AOL publishing and filmed entertainment segments, offset partially by an increase at the networks segment.
 

Draftfcb appoints 'data geek' worldwide chief strategy officer

In a move that underscores the increasing importance of data and analytics to its marketing campaigns, Draftfcb has awarded data expert Michael Fassnacht the newly created role of worldwide chief strategy officer. In his new role, Fassnacht will report directly to Draftfcb CEO and president Laurence Boschetto while helping to apply corporate strategy across individual global offices. He is expected to draw heavily on his data expertise for this job.

Former Facebook executive Owen Van Natta has been named CEO of MySpace, replacing co-founder Chris DeWolfe. The move came after News Corp.'s announcement yesterday that DeWolfe would soon step down and other executive roles may be shifted—including that of president and co-founder Tom Anderson.

While the direct marketing industry continues to be hit by layoffs and hiring freezes, there are signs of some improvement over the recent past, especially on the agency side, according to the latest employment report from Bernhart Associates. "Overall, hiring levels are still falling but the worst of the job losses may be over," said Jerry Bernhart, principal at Bernhart Associates Executive Search LLC, in a statement.

Three data companies merge for global analytics offerings

Business intelligence and data companies Attensity Corp., empolis GmbH and Living-e AG have merged under the name Attensity Group. Global headquarters will be located in Palo Alto, CA. The move expands the companies' global footprints and allows them to cross-sell each others' data offerings, which include information management applications from empolis, multi-channel communication and information management from Living-e, and deep text analytics software from Attensity Corp.
