Canada Post to Raise Rates in January

The price to mail a letter in Canada will rise a penny, to 50 cents (Canadian), in January.

Canada Post also has proposed new rates for other mail categories. The cost to send letters, cards and postcards to the United States weighing up to 30 grams will increase from 80 cents to 85 cents and from $1.40 to $1.45 to other foreign destinations.

Canadians have 60 days to make representations to the minister responsible for Canada Post regarding the proposed increases.

The new rates take effect Jan. 17. The 2 percent increase for First-Class is derived from a formula using Statistics Canada's consumer price index.
