Brookstone Sales Rise

Brookstone Inc.'s total sales in the first quarter ended May 3 rose 7.6 percent to $61 million from $56.6 million in the year-ago quarter, the Nashua, NH, company said yesterday.

Same-store sales in the comparable 13-week period surged 5.9 percent as sales in the direct-to-customer segment totaled $10.1 million versus $10.3 million last year on a slight reduction in catalog circulation.

The company reported a net loss of $6.4 million compared with the first-quarter 2002 net loss of $6.5 million. It said that given the "seasonal nature of specialty retailing, Brookstone generally carries a loss through the first three quarters and makes its profit in the fourth quarter."
