Bowater Offers Hybrid Paper to Cut Mail Costs

Papermaker Bowater Inc., Calhoun, TN, will introduce a high-bulk, lightweight printing paper this spring designed for direct mail, envelopes, general commercial printing and books.

Freesheet Hybrid blends two kinds of pulp -- mechanical and kraft -- which allows it to maintain strength, heft and high opacity at lighter basis weights, the company said. At 42.5 pounds, the Bowater Freesheet Hybrid will have the feel of a 50-pound traditional uncoated freesheet. Freesheet Hybrid will be available in basis weights from 40 pounds to 50 pounds.

By moving to a lighter basis weight, the company said, direct mailers can save on their mailing costs.
