Blockbuster Aims to Score Video Game Rentals

Looking to capitalize on sales of gaming systems this holiday season, Blockbuster launched a marketing campaign yesterday to position itself as the place to rent video games.

Through Jan. 21, Blockbuster customers will be entered in the Blockbuster Great Games Giveaway with every transaction. Blockbuster will give away 250 each of the X-Box, GameCube and Playstation 2 and Gameboy Advance systems. The promotion is being marketed through in-store point-of-purchase material, direct mail and television advertising.

To spur game rentals further, Blockbuster is offering a Games Rental Pass. Priced at $24.99 for Blockbuster Rewards members and $29.99 for non-Rewards members, the pass provides one game rental daily for 30 consecutive days.

And through Jan. 31, participating Blockbuster stores are providing one free five-day game rental to customers who bring in a receipt for a game console purchased through the promotional period. The free game rental must be in the format of the game system on the receipt.
