Barnes & Noble 3Q Net Sales Up

Bookseller Barnes & Noble Inc. reported yesterday that third-quarter sales at its Web site, www.barnesandnoble.com, were $17.2 million, up 38 percent over second quarter 1998 and 330 percent over third quarter 1997.


Through Oct. 31, barnesandnoble.com had more than 930,000 customers, a 29 percent increase over the number of customers at the end of the second quarter, the company said. Sales from repeat customers made up 51 percent of third-quarter sales.


Overall, Barnes & Noble reported that sales for the third quarter ended Oct. 31 were $674.1 million, up 9.6 percent from $614.8 million for the same period last year.


The company's retail business reported a third-quarter operating profit of $19.6 million, up 25.6 percent from last year's third quarter operating profit of $15.6 million.
