Bank of America will phase out its Dallas customer service call center by the end of the year, sending 500 agent positions out of state.

The jobs are being shifted to hi-tech call centers in Wichita, KS; Rio Rancho, NM; and Las Vegas, said Laura Hunter, spokeswoman at Bank of America, Charlotte, NC. The Dallas call center handled telephone banking calls from consumers.

The company said it decided to move the jobs to take advantage of the new technology it had invested in the other three centers.

Bank of America plans to open a new customer contact center at the Dallas location with different services. Bank of America anticipates offering jobs to 400 of the laid-off agents, with the rest having the option of relocating to other centers out of state, according to reports.

The company has not decided what duties the new Dallas call center will handle. The new center could handle duties such as Internet banking and mortgages, according to reports.
