AT&T Pays $34,500 to PA in No-Call Case

AT&T will pay $34,500 in fines and investigative costs to Pennsylvania to settle a no-call complaint, the state attorney general's office said last week.


The Bedminster, NJ-based company also promised to comply with Pennsylvania's telemarketing rules in the future.


From November 2002 to June 2004, consumers in 24 Pennsylvania counties who registered for the state's no-call list received multiple telemarketing calls from AT&T pitching discount long-distance telephone service, the attorney general's office said.


About 250 consumers filed complaints about AT&T telemarketing calls, but only 60 were traced to AT&T, the attorney general's office said. In the other complaints, consumers were unsure whether the calls originated from AT&T Wireless, AT&T Broadband or Universal Card Services.


AT&T said the violations resulted from computer problems, the attorney general's office said. The company admitted no wrongdoing in the settlement.
