*ATA Taps Management Company to Run Its Operations

The American Teleservices Association yesterday named an outside management firm, Management Options Inc., Washington, to oversee its operations as it seeks to regroup after the resignation of its CEO and board of directors last year.

The ATA will shutter its Los Angeles offices by the end of next month as it hands over the day-to-day operations to MOI, which specializes in managing and growing nonprofit associations and businesses. The contract was awarded following an ATA board meeting in Washington earlier this month when the company interviewed several management firms and had also considered hiring a full-time chief executive.

ATA president Gordon McKenna said MOI would be charged with increasing the membership base of the ATA, which set a goal of having 10,000 members within three years, or five times its current level of about 2,000 members. Other ATA goals include expanding its international membership and reviving local chapters. Plans call for four new local chapters in Chicago, Dallas/Fort Worth, New York and Washington, DC.

Other MOI clients include the Wine Institute, the Council for International Property Rights and the International Association for Continuing Education and Training, or IACET, which is perhaps best known for its issuance of Continuing Education Units, or CEUs, used to evaluate post-collegiate training courses for professionals.

In addition to conducting membership drives, MOI also will be responsible for helping the association reach its goal of raising $1.5 million by the end of this year, and will assume responsibility for ATA programs and publications, including The Connection, the association's quarterly newsletter.
