As mobile TV adoption grows, marketers slow to follow

AT&T announced on May 4 that it would begin providing a mobile TV ser­vice to subscribers in the US. The new service, provided by MediaFLO USA, allows users to watch live television programming from CBS Mobile, ESPN Mobile TV, Comedy Central and MTV, among others. Verizon Wireless started offering the same service — also provided by MediaFLO — last year.
 

CDD pushes FTC on privacy in mobile

The Center for Digital Democracy and the US Public Interest Research Group are taking on the Federal Trade Commission to address privacy issues in mobile marketing. Executive director of the Center for Digital Democracy Jeff Chester announced his intention to file a complaint at the FTC's town hall-style meeting, Beyond Voice: Mapping the Mobile Marketplace, held this week.

Amazon lets consumers shop via text

Amazon.com has introduced a new service that lets consumers use text messages to search and shop on its site. The new service, deemed TextBuyIt, expands Amazon's mobile offering beyond its mobile WAP site. Now consumers on any mobile device, Internet enabled or not, can use text messages to make purchases.

Celebrity gossip brand TMZ, a joint venture between Warner Bros. Television Group's Telepictures Produc­tions and AOL, has introduced a new advertiser-supported WAP site for the mobile phone. The new chatter site was developed in conjunction with mobile services firm Quattro Wireless.
 

Mobile advertising engaging consumers: Limbo

Brand recall for mobile advertising is up 20% for the first quarter of 2008, according to a new study by mobile advertising firm Limbo. In Limbo's Mobile Advertising Report Q1 2008 edition, it found that there are more than 255 million cell phone users in the US, up from 251 million in fourth quarter 2007.
