Sears settles with FTC over Web-tracking software

The Federal Trade Commission is reporting a settlement with Sears Holdings Management Corp. over charges the retailer failed to adequately disclose the scope of consumers' personal information it collected via a downloadable software application. According to the FTC's complaint, Sears invited certain consumers visiting the Sears.com and Kmart.com Web sites to become members of the "My SHC Community" and paid them $10 to participate in on-going interactions with the retailer.

K-VA-T, a regional chain of grocery stores in the Southeast, has started implementing Retalix Loyalty software to manage the latest phase of its customer loyalty program. The 106-store chain was already using Retalix StoreLine and HQ software to manage point-of-sale and price management, but still put out an RFP to about 20 vendors before choosing Retalix Loyalty. The new system, which will manage the Food City ValuCard Baby Club, Kids Club, Pet Club and Wine Club programs, delivers targeted, personalized offers to consumers and tracks offer performance in real-time.

Dairy Queen has signed on to use a new RFID-based mobile loyalty platform from mobile marketing company Tetherball. With TargusInfo, Ace Hardware employees need only collect customers' phone numbers at the point of sale to sign them up for an Ace Rewards Card. TargusInfo's On-Demand Identification services then use the numbers to automatically capture other contact information, like e-mail and mailing addresses, which Ace uses to communicate to customers.
