'American Idol' Goes Wireless

Viewers of Fox Broadcasting's "American Idol" with AT&T Wireless cell phones will be able to vote for contestants via text messaging, the companies said yesterday.

The second season of "American Idol," which begins Jan. 22, will include other wireless tie-ins including a sweepstakes and downloadable content of the show's stars and songs.

To vote for contestants, AT&T wireless users will send a text message to an abbreviated number, IDOLS01. These abbreviated numbers, called short codes, will be displayed during the broadcast alongside the call-in number after each contestant performs.

AT&T said it will launch a marketing campaign around "American Idol" that ties not only the AT&T Wireless brand to the show, but wireless services including text messaging, downloadable content, mMode and VoiceInfo.
