America Online Launches AOL Alerts E-Mail Service

America Online Inc. yesterday introduced AOL Alerts, a customizable notification service that delivers information to subscribers through their e-mail or AOL's Instant Messenger service. Alerts also can be delivered to a subscriber's mobile and hand-held devices.

The company said the new service delivers news, sports scores, stock data and weather forecasts. The information can be customized according to the subscriber's preferences and geographic location.

AOL Alerts service is similar to Microsoft Corp.'s .Net Alerts service, which is the first in a series of offerings the software giant plans to roll out. Microsoft is positioning .Net as a means to move its software sales online using subscriptions.

AOL said its new Alerts service is an extension of its AOL Anywhere service, which enables subscribers to access many of the company's services when they are away from their PCs.

The company did not say how much it would charge for the Alerts service.
