Amazon touts retail sales

Although the holiday season was predicted to be a rough one for online and multichannel retailers, Amazon.com said its 2008 holiday season was the e-commerce site's best ever.

Amazon said that more than 6.3 million items were ordered worldwide on its peak day of the season, December  15.

The company also issued several other factoids about its holiday season, including that Amazon's worldwide fulfillment network shipped over 5.6 million units on its peak day, and that it shipped items to 210 countries.
