Amazon Lowers Free Shipping Offer To $49 Orders

Amazon.com Inc. yesterday announced that it is offering free shipping on orders of $49 "as a long-term test."

The test is expected to last three to six months, according to Amazon. In January, the company introduced free shipping on orders over $99.

"Amazon.com is working hard to lower prices for customers, and we're eager to see how customers respond to this extended test of a $49 Free Super Saver Shipping option," said Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon in a statement. "We hope we'll be able to make it permanent."

In July 2001, Amazon lowered book prices to 30 percent off books over $20. In April, Amazon extended the 30 percent discount to books over $15.
