Airlines Fight USPS Decision to Use Trucks for Rural Mail
Eight regional airlines and three regional airline associations formed a coalition last week to fight the U.S. Postal Service's decision to terminate regional airmail contracts next May.The postal service has used private regional cargo and passenger airlines for more than a decade to help deliver mail to rural areas. But the USPS has announced it will use trucks instead, a move the coalition said would slow delivery -- especially in poor weather -- and cost jobs and infrastructure investments for regional airlines.
The coalition, called Save American Airmail, consists of Alpine Air, American Check Transport, Comair, Great Lakes Aviation, Mesa Air, Suburban Air, Trans States Airlines, Western Air Express, the Regional Airline Association, Regional Aviation Partners and the Regional Air Cargo Carriers Association.
