Undergraduates at Indiana University in South Bend and graduate students from Loyola University in Chicago won first-place gold in the 2004 Collegiate Echo Competition organized by the Direct Marketing Educational Foundation.

In second place with silver Echo awards were undergrads from Temple University in Philadelphia and grads from CUNY Baruch College Zicklin School of Business in New York.

The bronze winners were undergrads from Creighton University in Omaha, NE, and grads from CUNY Baruch College Zicklin School of Business.

These winners focused on targeting women-owned small businesses as part of Challenge 1. The Challenge 2 section required students to prepare direct marketing campaigns to convert existing customers from paper to electronic billing.

Winners of Challenge 2 were undergrads from Berry University of Mount Berry, GA, who took both gold and silver collegiate Echo awards.

The competition was conducted during the fall 2003 and spring 2004 semesters. Nearly 150 entries from undergrad and graduate colleges nationwide were received. The collegiate Echo competition has existed for 19 years.

Advanta Corp., an issuer of business credit cards for small businesses via its Advanta Bank Corp. arm, was this year's sponsor. Previous sponsors include Hallmark Cards, Pitney Bowes, the U.S. Postal Service, Upjohn's Rogaine, Ford Motor Co., BMG Direct, Bank One, Publishers Clearing House and Mazda North America.

This year's gold award winners will receive their trophies Oct. 17 at the Direct Marketing Association's International Echo Awards ceremony in New Orleans.
