ACTV Sees Profits Converge, Study Agrees
The company reported the growth in profits is due in large part to the licensing out of its HyperTV player. The HyperTV player is a download that enables viewers to participate in a synchronized TV and PC experience. It displays four windows -- a chat room, an ad and two content windows. Downloading the player takes little time, and ads as well as content can be synchronized.
Meanwhile, a study released by Showtime Networks, which has used the HyperTV player on several occasions, reported that the number of U.S. households claiming to simultaneously use a PC and a TV located in the same room has risen to 25 percent. This is a 39 percent increase over a similar study conducted by the company last year. The study also reported that 51 percent of digital television subscribers claim the same co-location.
The study indicated that 51 percent of digital subscribers without a PC claim they will purchase one this year, and of those who do own a PC but do not have Internet access, 61 percent said they would be surfing the Net very soon.
