More pressure for do-not-mail

The rallying cry for do-not-mail bills in several states grew stronger last week. A do-not-mail campaign to "stop junk mail" launched on March 11 with the support of celebrities including actor Adrian Grenier from HBO's Entourage and Daryl Hannah, known for her roles in Splash and the Kill Bill series. The campaign is the prod­uct of a nonprofit organization called ForestEthics.
 

USPS to offer price incentives for competitive products starting in May

The US Postal Service plans to start offering pricing incentives, such as volume-related discounts, for its competitive mail products including Express Mail, Priority Mail and other shipping services as of May 12. "Just providing service at a great price is our goal," said Steve Kearney, VP of pricing and classification for the USPS.
 

USPS to develop standards for Slim Jims

The US Postal Service announced on Monday that it is in the process of developing new mailing standards for folded self-mailers, booklets and folded booklets mailed at automation and machinable letter rates. Following last year's price increases for flat-size catalogs, more mailers started using letter-size booklets and folded mailers (also called "Slim Jims"), according to the USPS.
 

USPS pushes back Intelligent Mail barcode implementation

Postmaster General John Potter announced today that the US Postal Service will push back the date of implementation for the Intelligent Mail barcode from January 2009 to May 2009. In an advisory notice, Potter wrote that the decision to change the date was in response to public feedback. "Many of you told us that January 2009 was too soon," he wrote. "We will propose a May 2009 implementation, concurrent with our next annual price change."
 

President Bush nominates Nanci Langley for PRC commissioner

President George W. Bush has announced his nomination of Nanci Langley as a commissioner of the Postal Regulatory Commission. "I am honored to be nominated by President Bush," said Langley, not wanting to comment further being that the senate has not confirmed her postiion.
 

Mailers respond to rate increase proposals

The US Postal Service's announcement on February 11 that rates for First-Class Mail, Standard Mail, periodicals, pack­age services and special services would increase in May was met with little sur­prise by mailers. Overall, response to the proposed rate increase seems to be fairly positive, although some have greeted the news with caution.
 

Bigger in flat rate

The US Postal Ser­vice has introduced a new box, which costs $12.95 and ships to any US address. The Priority Mail large flat-rate box, at a foot long and wide, and 5.5 inches tall, is 50% larger than other USPS flat rate boxes. The service will be available beginning March 3.

The US Postal Service has announced several rate increases to its First-Class Mail, Standard Mail, Periodicals, Package Services and Special Services. The increases will take effect on May 12. In the Standard Mail category, parcels and not-flat machinables will see the largest percentage cost increase, at 9.66%.
