CDD pushes FTC on privacy in mobile

The Center for Digital Democracy and the US Public Interest Research Group are taking on the Federal Trade Commission to address privacy issues in mobile marketing. Executive director of the Center for Digital Democracy Jeff Chester announced his intention to file a complaint at the FTC's town hall-style meeting, Beyond Voice: Mapping the Mobile Marketplace, held this week.

Phishing grows as NDR spam tapers off

Phishing spam is on the rise, according to Symantec. According to Symantec's report State of Spam May 2008, which examines spam trends from April, 80% of all e-mail from the month was spam. Of these spam messages, 19% were either fraud (phishing) or scam e-mails, which encourage recipients to give away personal information.
 

Comcast and Return Path to offer e-mail feedback loops

Comcast has teamed up with Return Path to offer a new complaint feedback loop for e-mail senders. Now, mailers who send to Comcast users can use the new feedback loop to see if recipients are reporting their messages as spam.

Quebecor World faces more cutbacks

Quebecor World Inc. said it will close one US facility and significantly downsize a Canadian facility as part of its three-year retooling program, resulting in the loss of approximately 700 full-time jobs. Earlier this month, Quebecor World said it will close its Magog, Quebec, facility, which produces magazines and retail inserts, resulting in a loss of approximately 300 full-time positions.
 

Mailers lax on IMB compliance

Despite efforts by the US Postal Service as well as some direct mail service companies such as Pitney Bowes, news about the Intelligent Mail barcode (IMB) may not be reaching the majority of mailers. The IMB, developed by the USPS to encode routing and tracking information on mail, will eventually replace Postnet barcodes, which only contain the routing code.
 

Amazon files complaint against tax law

On May 2, Amazon filed a complaint in New York Supreme Court objecting to the state law approved by Gov. David A. Paterson last week, which requires out-of-state online retailers to collect taxes on everything sold in the state if it has agents or affiliates in New York. Amazon, which has thousands of affiliates with New York addresses, is contesting the constitutionality of the law.
 

Gander Mountain embraces multichannel strategy

Outdoor gear and apparel retailer Gander Mountain is making a big push into catalogs and e-commerce this year. Its efforts saw light this week when the 48-year-old brand was featured in a 324-page catalog drop to 2 million homes. Gander Mountain also expects to launch its own branded e-commerce Web site and catalog later this year.
