Vertis reports $327M loss, restructuring plan

On Monday, March 31, Vertis Communications Inc. reported a $327 million loss for 2007 and hired financial advisory firm Lazard Ltd. to help implement a financial restructuring plan. The move comes after Vertis evaluated its $246.5 million in goodwill during the fourth quarter of 2007 and "determined that, because of the company's debt load, the value of the $246.5 million should be written off to assure technical compliance with the accounting rules," according to Mike DuBose, chairman/CEO of Vertis.

Comcast has filed counter-charges against e-commerce firm e360Insight, which is currently suing Comcast for allegedly blocking its e-mails. The Comcast complaint, which was filed in the US District Court for the Northern District of Illinois last week, claims that Dave Lindhardt, president of e360Insight, has allegedly sent spam to Comcast subscribers
 

Spam issues center on perception

Recently, Virginia's Supreme Court upheld the nation's first conviction of "felony spam." Virginia Attorney General Bob McDon­nell commented on the case, saying, "Spam not only clogs e-mail inboxes and destroys productivity, it also defrauds citizens and threatens the online revolution. Thanks to the Virginia Anti-SPAM Act, we now have the tools to go after spammers and put them behind bars."
 

ValueClick, FTC reach $2.9M settlement

Online advertiser ValueClick Inc. and its subsidiary Hi-Speed Media have agreed to pay a $2.9 million civil penalty to settle Federal Trade Commission charges that its advertising and e-mails were deceptive and violated federal law, in the biggest CAN-SPAM settlement since its inception in 2003. ValueClick agreed to the settlement without an admission of liability or concession that it violated any laws.
