Microsoft withdraws proposal to acquire Yahoo

Microsoft officially withdrew its proposal to acquire Yahoo on May 3. In a letter to Yahoo CEO Jerry Yang, Microsoft CEO Steven A. Ballmer wrote, "By failing to reach an agreement with us, you and your stockholders have left significant value on the table."
 

United Online Inc.acquired FTD

FTD Group Inc., the online floral delivery business, was acquired for $456 million by United Online Inc., which owns social networking site Classmates.com and customer loyalty site MyPoints.com. The deal is expected to close in the third quarter of this year.
 

InfoUSA announces rebranding plans

InfoUSA, the database and list marketer, will rebrand as InfoGroup, effective June 1. A company press release said that the name change was precipitated by the firm's recent acquisitions of several research companies around the world, including Opinion Research. The release said that these acquisitions "provided the company a significant platform and foothold in the international marketplace."
 

Sharper Image to be sold at auction

Sharper Image Corp. is pursuing a sale of its business and assets. Any sale of the specialty retailer, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in February, will be subject to approval of the bankruptcy court. The company expects to complete a sale via auction by the end of May.
 

Yahoo releases first quarter results

Yahoo reported first quarter financial results Tuesday, reporting revenues of $1.9 billion, a 9% year-over-year increase. "[These results] are all the more remarkable when you take into account the recent economic environment and the uncertainty stemming from Microsoft's unsolicited proposal," said Yahoo CEO Jerry Yang in a conference call on April 22.
 

WPP ups commitment to Chinese market with stake in HDT Technologies

Alliance ends acquisition deal, files lawsuit

Alliance Data Systems Corp. (ADS) has officially terminated its $6.4 billion dollar acquisition agreement with The Blackstone Group and is suing the private equity firm for a $170 million break-up fee.
