PCMag to move online

PC Magazine will go all digital beginning in February. Parent company Ziff Davis Media called the move the "final step in an evolutionary process." It also announced that the PCMag Network will be renamed PCMag Digital Network with PCMag.com as its lead property.

Pulp and Paper International to relaunch in January

RISI, an information provider for the global forest products industry, is combining its two magazines into a new, global publication. Pulp and Paper International, which once covered non-US companies, and the US-based Pulp and Paper will become the new Pulp and Paper International (PPI) magazine as of January.
 

NYT weekend glossy Play-ed out

Play, the New York Times' quarterly sports magazine, has been shuttered. The glossy, launched in February 2006, had been "breaking even," the Times reported, thanks to successful ad sales in its Summer Olympics issue, but was closed as part of a cost-saving measure.
 

Washington CEO acquired, folded into Seattle Business

Washington CEO, a business monthly operated by Sabey Corp., has been acquired by Tiger Oak Publications for an undisclosed amount. It will cease publication after the December issue.

I learned many things about consumer marketing at my first circulation job at CBS Publications many years ago. My then-boss, Bob Krefting, taught me most of what I still practice. I best remember his observation that the most difficult task in publishing is determining how to organize a consumer marketing department in a multititle publishing company. All of my experiences since then have reinforced his comment.

Magazine layoffs continue as more venerable pubs make cuts

This week, Time Inc. revealed more details on its restructuring, which called for the layoffs of 600 people, while National Geographic, the Economist Group and Doubledown Media made changes of their own. The Time Inc. update indicated that as many as 92 positions would be cut from the consumer marketing and sales group as that department realigns and centralizes management in New York.
 

FT ups digital efforts

The Financial Times relaunched its Web site on Monday, fresh on the heels of an October jump in Web traffic and print circulation numbers. FT.com, reworked for the first time in six years, now features five updated homepages, including a new Middle East edition. The new site also showcases a homepage "Top 10" list of stories hand-picked by editors, market data, portfolio tools, RSS feeds and keyword alerts.
 

Globe lays off 42

The Boston Globe is laying off 42 employees in response to faltering revenues, particularly in print advertising. Most of the job cuts fell in the newspaper's advertising, circulation and marketing departments, and for many of those affected, last week was their last at the newspaper.
