Virtual MTV turns to Oddcast for Web-based interactivity

MTV has partnered with Oddcast to use the latter's Voki platform of speaking avatars on its Virtual MTV site. The interactive avatar environments, called Playgrounds, allow users to record their views on the network's The Hills, Pimp My Ride or The Real World to personalized avatars that speak when clicked on.

InfoUSA announces rebranding plans

InfoUSA, the database and list marketer, will rebrand as InfoGroup, effective June 1. A company press release said that the name change was precipitated by the firm's recent acquisitions of several research companies around the world, including Opinion Research. The release said that these acquisitions "provided the company a significant platform and foothold in the international marketplace."

Salesforce platform now on Google Apps

Salesforce.com, a provider of on-demand CRM services, has partnered with search giant Google to offer Salesforce for Google Apps, the companies announced today. The platform integrates customer communications sent through Gmail, as well as documents, Google Talk conversations and shared calendars utilized by the sales team, with the Salesforce software-as-a-service (SaaS) CRM program, according to Google and Salesforce promotional videos.

RMI VP Laura Smith dies at 43

Laura Smith, VP and director of list management at RMI Direct Marketing Inc., died on April 5 at age 43. A memorial will be held in her honor on April 9 at the Green Funereal Home in Danbury, CT. Smith worked in the direct marketing industry for more than 25 years, taking her first position at AZ Marketing Services Inc. at age 17.

Southern Fulfillment Services acquires Pittman & Davis

After an approximately 10-month search, food and gift cataloger Pittman & Davis has been sold to holding company Southern Fulfillment Services LLC. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The buy will enable Southern Fulfillment Services to expand geographically into Texas, and diversify its operations and cross-marketing tactics, according to a company release.

B-to-b e-mail lists see dip, but still priciest category

Worldata's Winter 2008 List Price Index, which examines prices and trends in CPM for lists, found that permission-based e-mail b-to-b is the highest priced category, with a February 2008 straight average price of $287/M, though this represents a decrease of $2/M from last year.
