Catfish campaign pushes health, economic pluses

In the 1980s, August was designated as National Catfish Month by Congress to pay tribute to the contributions the US catfish industry makes to the econ­omy. To celebrate this month, The Cat­fish Institute, the marketing arm of the US Farm-Raised Catfish industry, is running a new ad campaign featur­ing three farmers who raise catfish in Alabama, Arkansas and Mississippi — this year's Catfish Farmers of the Year.
 

Smithsonian direct business relaunched

The Smithsonian relaunched its catalog and online store on August 4 after being closed for four months. Smithsonian's direct business shut down this spring when the distribution center it was using through third-party fulfillment provider AB&C Group unexpectedly ceased all operations.

Scholastic sells continuities division

Scholastic Corp. has entered into a definitive agreement with Sandvik AS to purchase its US direct-to-home continuities business. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Scholastic expects to close the sale in the first quarter of fiscal 2009.

Transcontinental trims jobs in PA

Transcontinental Direct USA has cut 50 jobs at three of its Pennsylvania locations. Employees at the Orwigsburg, PA; Hamburg, PA; and Reading, PA sites were informed of the layoffs on Monday. Transcontinental has seven factories in Pennsylvania; the others will not be affected by the cutbacks.
 

Amazon buys Canada's AbeBooks

Amazon.com Inc. has reached an agreement to acquire Canadian company AbeBooks, online marketplace for books, with more than 110 million primarily used, rare and out-of-print books for sale. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
