1-800-Flowers Clocks 800,000 Valentine's Orders

Telephone and online florist 1-800-Flowers.com Inc. said yesterday it fulfilled nearly 800,000 orders between Jan. 27 and Feb. 14 for Valentine's Day.

More than 62 percent of the orders were online, the Westbury, NY, company said. It sold more than 200,000 dozen roses, 30,000 dozen tulips, 65,000 gift plants and 60,000 stuffed animals.

Other items sold include Waterford crystal, popcorn, confection and thousands of boxes of Hershey and Godiva chocolates.

The company claims orders increased despite an ailing economy and worldwide political unrest.

Even an online contest on 1800flowers.com for voting on the best valentine lines drew 20,000 contestants. An effort to strengthen relationships with customers, this year saw double the number of participants from last year.
